Well-Traveled Medical Student Selected Rotary International Ambassadorial Scholar

The first time Robert Caskey, a second-year student in the University of Mississippi School of Medicine, flew in a propeller plane was while he was in Africa conducting research as a Rotary International Ambassadorial Scholar.

As the plane was taking off, an overhead air conditioning control panel dropped out as an already jittery Caskey and about 10 other passengers looked on.

"We all laughed nervously," he said. They remained on the plane and arrived at the destination safely.

Med Student One of Eight Nationally to "Experience" CDC Fellowship

Taylor Wofford’s interest in cardiovascular diseases has led to an opportunity only eight medical students around the country get each year.

Wofford is postponing her fourth year at the University of Mississippi Medical Center School of Medicine to study at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as a participant in the CDC Experience, a fellowship program for physicians-in-training at the CDC. The yearlong program combines classroom instruction in epidemiology and biostatistics with hands-on public health work, including field investigations of disease outbreaks and other public health threats.

Nursing Students' Ukrainian Trip "Experience of a Lifetime"

Several School of Nursing students and faculty members are trading the typical sun and fun associated with spring break for work in the cold and snowy Ukraine.

Ten undergraduate students, two graduate students and two faculty members left March 18 for Kiev, Ukraine, and will return March 29. Lynne Horecky, a senior nursing student, expects the 11-day trip to be a learning experience.

"I'll be curious to see what diseases and illnesses are prevalent in their population and how it compares to Mississippi and the United States," she said.

NSDA President Juggles Education, Fatherhood, Community Service

Maintaining a proper balance has become a way of life for Bradley Harrelson.

The third-year student in the School of Dentistry at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, father of three and holder of a master’s of divinity degree, has had to juggle the responsibilities of being a full-time student and parent who is active in community service and has a part-time career as an educational entertainer.

Through it all, he has sustained one single priority.

SHRP Associate Professor Named To National Accrediting Commission

Ann Peden, the editor of a widely adopted health information management textbook and a member of the University of Mississippi Medical Center faculty, will serve as a board member on a national accrediting commission starting in January.

Peden, an associate professor of health information management in the School of Health Related Professions, will serve on the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM) for a minimum of three years. The Clinton resident, who was elected to the post earlier this year, will have the option of serving a fourth year.

Graduate Education Alliance Ignites Minority Enrollment in Doctoral Programs

The University of Mississippi Medical Center is the newest member of a five-school alliance seeking to increase the number of underrepresented students enrolled in science, technology, engineering and mathematics doctoral programs in Mississippi.

Since the inception of the Alliance for Graduate Education in Mississippi, the number of graduating minority doctoral students at the University of Mississippi, Mississippi State Univer-sity, Jackson State University and the University of Southern Mississippi has increased from 13 between 1992-1997 to 49 between 1999-2004.
